After several collaborations, Honsenn - an Asian manufacturer - appealed to Studio Dott once again to expand their existing portfolio with a new product. We were asked to design noise-cancelling earbuds that meet the needs of their customers. Earbuds are more than a functional product; they are part of one’s lifestyle and should, ultimately, fit one’s personality. It goes without saying that design matters!
'Design for all' vs. 'Standing out'
For many companies, the success of a product is determined by its profitability. No surprise there that producers selling ‘lifestyle’ expect their product to be appealing to the broadest variety of people. ‘Design for all’ … sure! But it is harder than it seems. With a unique and distinctive design, you risk ending up in a niche market, attracting only a small group of potential buyers. But when being too modest and generic, your product risks getting lost into the mass.
Creating a product that feels both familiar and innovative, YES we can!
Diving into the details…
Mood boards … check! Multiple sketches and exploration… check and check! Now it’s money time. Time to make the necessary decisions! Up next, translating the designs into a 3D model. Functionality, manufacturability and aesthetics are paramount as we refine and tweak the product until it meets our high standards. Yep, we have a keen eye for detail…
Consistent action creates consistent results
Not only the earbuds went through these different phases. Their protective case required the same amount of creativity, precision and TLC. We wanted a unique design fully aligned with the design language of the earbuds.
As designers, we obviously attach great importance to the aesthetic design, but we wouldn’t be Studio Dott if we didn’t go that extra mile to perfect the ergonomics and fitting as well. We tried the model on everyone we could find and were "all ears" to their remarks.
